B&T: from suppressor shop in Spiez to the US Army's submachine gun

The US Army had not bought a submachine gun in more than 50 years. In 2019 it did, and the choice was the B&T APC9K in the Sub Compact Weapon program, ahead of SIG Sauer among others. The award covered 350 weapons with an option for up to 1,000 more.

The weapon equips security details protecting staff officers. They work at close quarters and need to carry concealed, so the requirements were blunt: short overall length, low recoil and fast follow-up shots.

The APC series covers more than the Army's 9 mm: 10 mm, .40 and .45, plus 5.56x45 as the APC223.

B&T started somewhere else entirely. Founded in Spiez, Switzerland, in 1991 as a suppressor manufacturer, the company today builds complete weapon systems in Thun. Weapon and suppressor come out of the same house, and the suppressor lines are Impuls, PRINT-X and RBS. The company that began by making firearms quiet ended up building them outright.

TacDane distributes B&T and has walked the factory floor in Thun. At DALO Industry Days, B&T will be at stand U 2324 in person.
